A hot tar and chip or hot tar and gravel driveway costs less, because it is a topping surface that you can use over old surfaces. This means you can freshen up your driveway, without having to give it a complete overhaul and excavation. The finish is very presentable and consists of a layer of coloured gravel pressed into hot liquid tar and set. We roll the gravel chippings down to compact them, which creates a very strong bond with the tar. This provides a hard-wearing, low maintenance surface.

How does Hot Tar & Chip work?

Hot tar & chip (or hot tar & grit) is constructed by evenly distributing a base layer of hot liquid tar then applying 

washed coloured gravel onto to create Hot Tar & Chip. The aggregate (gravel) is evenly distributed over the hot seal spray, then the gravel is rolled into the bitumen using a power roller creating a well-bonded surface. A tar & gravel surface can optionally have one or two coats of Tar depending on the condition of the sub-base surface that the hot tar/bitumen & chip is being sprayed on. The introduction of polymer-modified bitumen and emulsion binder has increased the ability of this surface to prevent crack reflection and improve stone retention. Newer techniques use asphalt emulsion (a mixture of liquid asphalt, surfactant and water) instead of asphalt. Hot tar & Chip is a great driveway surfacing option. Hot tar & chip looks beautiful ull and is an affordable option compared to most other surface options. Tar & Chip, Tunbridge Wells, Kent will last from 8-12 years depending on how its maintained.
